8:45 – 10:45 Effective Fighting Back Campaigns (2 hours)
Collective bargaining, dues check-off, wages, pensions, benefits and worker rights are all under attack by politicians who want to destroy public unions – no state, province or community is safe or immune. From coast to coast, IAFF affiliates are fighting back with aggressive campaigns that include print, broadcast and social media to deliver the message that fire fighters and other public employees are not to blame for the nation’s fiscal problems. This workshop will provide affiliate leaders with a strategic approach to their own fighting back campaign efforts in response to these politically motivated attacks.
10:45-11:00 Break
11:00 – 12:00 The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Public Safety & 7K exemptions
Jake Schweitzer, IPFF and Paul Iversen, Labor Center
12:00 – 1:00 Lunch
1:00 – 3:00 Introduction to Political Action (2 hours)
Local government officials are ultimately responsible for making decisions that affect the wages and benefits of fire fighters. To secure the best working conditions for your members, it is essential that your local union becomes politically active to ensure that those candidates who support fire fighter issues are elected and remain in office. This workshop will give you an overview of the political process and teach you how to set up a political action plan that is most effective in achieving your goals.
3:00 – 3:15 Break
3:15- 5:15 IAFF PEP - NFPA 1710 – Implementation (Part 3 of 3)
This workshop provides information on how to build a campaign to implement the NFPA 1710 Standard. This workshop will provide guidance on how to develop a campaign strategy and deliver the message effectively. Affiliate leaders will learn how to create a campaign, develop a political action plan, and communicate with the media. This is the third workshop in a three-part series addressing the NFPA 1710 Standard.
